The Minimum Wage Debacle â€Å"I could be easily replaced by someone tomorrow for less money.† What a dispiriting statement. I was told this from a coworker in October of last year. This coworker has worked for the same grocery store for over twenty years. His remark caused me to formulate many questions about the ethics of business. More specifically though is the question of how this can be a bigger problem than I had originally thought. I have worked many low end jobs, and have seen first hand many people who struggled because of their low wage. In the days of uncertainty we live in we should be able to make enough money to support our families. He says it is contingent on the company raising the employees wage voluntarily. He does in fact concede that he knows raising the minimum wage will cost some jobs. He believes that most of these classes of people would be willing to take the risk of losing their job to being able to make more. Kinsley gives a moral side of the minimum wage dilemma, and another article written by the Congressional Digest, titled â€Å"Raising the Minimum wage: The Renewed Debate over Fair Labor Standards†(7) used the term â€Å"moral imperative† to describe the situation at hand. The people who are struggling each day to make ends meet want to have more success, but they dont know where to start, and they have a disadvantage because they cannot take risks for fear of losing their job. Both these articles articulate that this isnt just an economic dilemma, it is a moral one. The lack of action could very well cost people the roof s over their heads, and the minimum wage worker will feel desperate because of their lack to afford the most basic necessities of life. In more recent history, broadened opportunity has opened up an escape for those stuck in the lower classes. A cohort study (article 1) and case study (article 2) that focused on the risk factors associated with hypertension were selected to be compared and contrasted. The cohort study was the first article I was able to read and looked at the relation of several sociodemographic, behavioral, and biochemical parameters on the number of hypertensions incidence among the group of subjects from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (Ford Cooper, 1991). The subjects were separated into four main groups being that of black males (n=231), white males (n=2,370), black females (n=523) and white females (n=3,949) with a combined subject number of 14,407 (ages 25-74 years old) with an average follow up of 10 years (Ford Cooper, 1991). By design various subgroups of the total number of subjects completed different study components and questionnaires, which meant that not all of the information was available for each respondent. An example of this was given by the study, which stated that dietary data available was only available for 11,348 subjects, serum potassium and sodium data for only 3,059 participants, whereas serum magnesium data were available for all participants (Ford Cooper, 1991). The study also looked at independent variables, which included age, income, education, body mass index etc. along with dietary sub-analysis and continues variables all shown in table 1 (Ford Cooper, 1991).
