An Introduction to Irregular Verbs in English

Although fewer than 200 verbs are classified as irregular, these include some of the most common words in English. Here, after briefly reviewing regular verbs, well look at the principal parts of irregular verbs. Review of Regular Verbs Regular verbs have three basic forms: the present (or base form), the past (ending in -ed), and the past participle (also ending in -ed). These three forms are referred to as the principal parts of a verb. Heres how we might list the principal parts of the regular verb laugh: I always laugh at her jokes. (present)She laughed nervously during her speech. (past)We have often laughed together. (past participle) The past participle form works with different auxiliary verbs (has or have; had) to form different tenses. (See Forming the Past Tense of Regular Verbs.) What Are Irregular Verbs? Irregular verbs are those verbs that do not end in -ed in the past tense. Though their endings differ from those of regular verbs, irregular verbs rely on the same auxiliary verbs (also called helping verbs) to indicate past, present, and future time. Principal Parts of Irregular Verbs Irregular verbs have three principal parts: I tell a joke. (present)I told a joke. (past)I have told a joke. (past participle) Some irregular verbs, such as tell, have the same form in the past and the past participle. Others, however, have different forms: I wear a cap. (present)I wore a cap. (past)I have worn a cap. (past participle) With irregular verbs such as wear, we need to learn the different forms for the past and the past participle. Auxiliaries with Irregular Verbs Just like regular verbs, irregular verbs are used with various auxiliaries to form different tenses. For instance, we use has or have with the past participle of an irregular verb to form the present-perfect tense: Tom has worn out his welcome. Similarly, we use had with the past participle of an irregular verb to form the past perfect tense: I had never worn a seat belt before you told me why I should. And we use will with the present form of an irregular verb to form the future tense: I will wear a seat belt from now on. According to Agricultural Organization and UN Food, Mexico’s adult obesity rates are above that of the United States, with an obesity rate of 32.8% compared to the 31.8%. Junk food and sugary drinks have caused these rate to rise, which makes them negative externalities of consumption, which the private benefits to consumers of a good are greater than the social benefits of its consumption, in other words the good creates spillover costs on a third party. A tax, payment made by an individual or a firm to the government, has been imposed by the Mexican government to eliminate such negative externalities. Those who consume these goods now witness increased prices at Pso. Due to the law of demand its expected to see a lower quan tity of these goods consumed. Fast food goods, although have a steep demand curve meaning demand is very price inelastic, an increases in prices for the good won’t receive much of a response but if the government is to impose a tax such that it greatly increases the price of fast foods to gap that of healthier food, then we can begin to see some response from consumers. The equilibrium quantity, therefore falls closer to the social optimum (Qso). However, we witness decreased consumer surplus from A+B+C+D to A and decreased producer surplus from E+G+F to B. The corrective tax, imposed on fast food and sugary beverages has in fact eliminated the externalities, which corrects the overallocation of resources. In the case where the tax imposed had made the prices for fast foods greater than that of healthier food then these goods would have a positive cross price elasticity. For example, if there is an increase in the price for fast food by 10% and quantity demanded for healthier food increases by 2% then XED = +0.2, and because this is a positive number we can see that they are substitutes. The Power Crisis in Tamil Nadu The power crisis has come to stay in the state of Tamil Nadu. For many months now, power cuts for over six hours in the towns and villages of the state have been the norm. Relief to some extent is expected when the Koodamkulam plant is commissioned in about six months from now. Most of the newly approved power units are only in the land dentification stage right now. The losses in transmission and distribution of power are also significant with the state-controlled Electricity Board not performing at expected levels. Industry lobbies have been demanding the unbundling of production, distribution and transmission of power in the state to improve this, but there has been no response. The state government has on the other hand approached HT consumers with a proposal that they share the cost of power during evening hours. This if accepted will ensure that there is some relief given to units that rely on generators for their power during evening and other peak equirements. If at all there is a bright side to the story, it is the increasing focus on non- conventional sources of energy. IT majors who account for at least 500MW of power consumption during peak-hours nave begun discussing the viability ot using solar panels. At least one IT major in the city has begun working with wind energy. The month of September in fact saw the shortfall in power in the state coming down due to a doubling of the wind power generated from 600 MW to 1200 MW. A timeline is essential as well, as far as setting date on completing projects and checking in. Successes of projects come with being responsible, and communication within a team. Team members are more engaged when they have a clear outline of the work at hand, and what is expected of them. By focusing on individual strengths, sharing the work load and allowing for equal input, you push team cohesion and effectiveness to its limits.
